How the beginning of the book begins is the Ralph and boys named Piggy are addressing their situation on the island that their plane has crashed on. They talk to each other and tease each other while at the same time they are trying to figure out what to do. Piggy finds a conch and tells Ralph that sometimes they make noises like a trumpet if you blow into it. Piggy had the brilliant idea of blowing it and maybe the other boys would here it and think of it as an assembly. Ralph blew it and the boys came running towards them, even the little boys.
Jack was the mean one from the beginning. He gives the reader a bad feeling and he foreshadows darkness. Everybody agreed that they needed a leader. They all voted Ralph as the group leader. The first they decide as a group is they needed to figure out how big the island was. Jack wants to go find out with Simon and Ralph, which left Piggy with all the little ones. The three of them find out that the island is shaped like a boat. The boat shaped island represents all the boys together on the same boat and that they have to rely on each other to survive.
On their way back Jack runs into a Pig in the jungle. He tells the boys that he will kill it next time for food. When the all the boys are back together they figure what they need to survive together.
