What comes to mind thinking of Jack the savage? The words that come to me are brutal, dark, and menacing. He, in a way, tortures the other kids. He manipulates the kids by telling them Ralph is the bad guy and he is the one to blame for everything bad that happens to them. Jack is the one trying to win over the group. With the back-up of his side of the island he thinks he can take over the island and rule.
Jack lacks verisimilitude. He only worries about himself and he gets his way by hiding behind the truth. One example is when the “beast from the air” or the pilot and his parachute flying in the sky and the boys see it while on a hunting trip. The boys shout and run away from it thinking it I a beastie. When they finally settle down Jack says that it wasn’t real. He did not want to believe he saw it.
A dramatic irony example is when the beast flies over the boys do not know that it is the pilot and his parachute. They think it is the beastie coming to get them. This dramatic irony gives the audience or readers a suspenseful feeling and keep them thinking ahead of could or might happen to the boys.
The humorous part about the dramatic irony is that there is no beastie. The boys do not know that, but the whole reason they keep fighting is because of the beastie. They have no proof that it is the beastie and they also have no proof that it is not the beastie, yet. Because of this they all will keep fighting until they figure it out on their own.
